Nomadism has acquired a new dimension during the 21st century due to the explosive development that information and communication technologies have experienced. The new digital work environments, as well as the more flexible and open-to-change mentality of Generation Z, have given rise to a new type of nomadism by their own choice: that of digital nomads. Their lifestyle and moving around for work have also been boosted by the rise of teleworking due to the pandemic. Kanso Hostel is an accommodation aimed at these digital nomads, which seeks to provide a serene and charming environment in the heart of Madrid.
At Narita we have been in charge of creating the visual identity and communication style of Kanso Hostel. A proposal conceived on a par with interior design, designed by the Stone Designs studio, with whom we regularly collaborate on projects of this type, which require comprehensive actions. Kanso in Japanese means simplicity, getting rid of the superfluous. The design of the hostel, its graphics and its communication are based on these concepts, seeking to impact a community of travelers who share these values and lifestyle.
Kanso Hostel is a niche accommodation proposal for people with a simple and natural lifestyle, with a sustainable and conscious mentality, who travel with the minimum and often alone. Without giving up being in the center of the city, they are selective people who value the design of the spaces in which they stay, as well as the possibility of connecting with other travelers who share their same values. The design and communication style of Kanso Hostel had to reflect, therefore, not only these concepts in its interior design and graphics, but also foster the feeling of belonging to a community.
Simplicity and minimalism were the keys to both the Stone Designs interior design project and the visual identity created by Narita, both designs connected through a sign: a cross, which is materialized both in the graphic applications and in the interior design of the hostel. This sign, simple and dynamic, seeks to convey that feeling of community, of paths that cross.
On a graphic level, this crossbar accompanies the logo of the Kanso Hostel brand, whose graphic proposal, for its part, is inspired by digital illuminated signs vintage. But it can also be applied in a flexible way separately, in very diverse supports and formats: from stationery to icons for social networks and all kinds of elements of merchandising. Furthermore, it is a very powerful sign, which provides great brand coherence when applied to support the communication messages created by Narita to convey the values of the accommodation: “Travel with a purpose”, “Prioritize the place, enjoy essentials”, “ Collectives inspire change” and “Smart social living”.
